Breathtaking views.
4x4 required mountain drive.
If you are interested visiting big island, trying to be here no matter what weather conditions are. Weather will changes for you.
I was absolutely delighted to discover that the gallery at W.M. Keck has just been reopened to the public! I was told that it was just a "soft" opening; that I was welcome to browse the exhibits but that tours would not resume until June. I had a blast looking at the models of the observatories and found the information about the telescope mirrors fascinating. They even have a sample of the mirror material on display. The people were extremely friendly and made me feel very welcome. I can't wait to go back for a tour!
Too bad you can't go in and see the stars. Getting there is great. Must have a 4x4 to proceed past the visitor information center. Views during the day and at sunset are breathtaking.
It was a great experience and totally worth the drive. Remember that you need a 4x4 to get to the top. And try to get there half an hour before sunset. It was pretty cold in May, so don't depend on your shorts and sandals. Bring a warm jacket and even a pair of gloves.
Most people stop at University of Hawaii telescope facility. Leave them there and drive a bit further to Keck observatory to get a clear view of all the beauty in front of you.
Amazing place for Astronomy buffs. High enough to feel dizzy from lack of oxygen. The Keck telescope visitor center is a must see place if you like to explore.
The best ground based observatory! You can’t go up to the summit on your own, but it’s beautiful up there and the telescopes world class.
We visited Keck during a kama’aina tour of observatories on the summit of Mauna Kea. Amazing. If you get the opportunity to visit, don’t miss it. The view is beautiful and the observatory and staff are extremely impressive.
This is a great place to stop and learn about space and history of the observatories. A guide will give a good overview about the current and future projects. They will answer any questions too! If you have kids that love space this is a great stop! 5 stars!
